Sleeping Quality Assessment of Elder and Old People with Cardiovascular Diseases Thesis author: Giedrė Cvirkaitė, the IVth course student of VU nursing bachelor programme. Thesis supervisor: asist. Viktorija Kielaitė, Vilnius university, faculty of medicine, department of Nursing and basics of internal diseases. Key definitions: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Aim of the thesis: The assessment of the sleep quality between elder and old age people, who are ill with heart and vascular diseases. Thesis objectives: To determine the sleep quality index of the elder and old age people. To determine the actions that are taken by the respondents in order to improve/maintain their quality of sleep. To determine the opinion of respondents about the actions of the nursing personnel that improve/maintain their quality of sleep. Research methods. In total 102 elder and old age respondents from 65 years of age, ill with heart and vascular diseases, participated in the research. Of them: 77 women and 25 men, 65 - 103 years of age, average age – 81±8.69 years. The questionnaire of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Assessment Index (PSQI) and a 2-part questionnaire prepared by ourselves was used for the performance of the research. Standardised Pittsburgh Sleep Quality questionnaire was composed of 10 questions. Questions 5 and 10 were divided in parts. The questionnaire created by the author was composed of two parts that contained statements about the actions performed by respondents and nursing personnel that improve/maintains the quality of the sleep. The data analysis was performed by using the programs of statistical analysis: "R (R for Windows 3.2.2) commander" (Rcmdr) and "Excel 2013". The applied indicators: average, mode, standard deviation. Also for the calculation of the independence of two variables χ2 (Chi) criterion was chosen. In order to identify the linear dependency between the two random values, the Spearman's (rs) correlation coefficient was chosen. Results. The identified sleep quality index showed that values of the index fluctuated from 0 to 15 points. Sleep quality index (PKMI) of at least 60 respondents (58.8%) was > 5 points and was evaluated as poor sleep. After overview of the distribution of the actions that improve/maintain the quality of sleep, according to the sleep quality index, it was determined that those, who sleep well do not try to fall asleep forcibly, when one third of those, who sleep did otherwise. Of all research participants (n=102) only one fifth - 20 (19.6%) stated that nursing personnel performs certain actions that are specified in the questionnaire. Conclusions. 1. After the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Assessment Index of the research participants was calculated, it was determined that the subjective sleep quality of the large majority of the respondents is bad: the sleep quality of the large majority men is better than that of large majority women. 2. After the performance of the research, it was established that habits of the majority of the respondents improve/maintain the quality of their sleep, the majority of the respondents stated that use the bed only for sleep and only at night, and the group of well sleeping respondents stood out, because stated that do not try to fall asleep forcibly, when one third of those, who sleep bad did otherwise. No exclusions were identified between age and gender groups: the actions that improve/maintain the quality of sleep of the large majority of the elderly, older age, longevous men and women matched. 3. It was ascertained that one fifth of the respondents stated that they noticed the actions of the nursing personnel that improve/maintain their quality of sleep: usually the nursing personnel ventilated the zone of their sleeping room, several respondents stated that nursing personnel helps them to perform personal hygiene and proposes to perform relaxing activity before the sleep.
