Kalėjimo subkultūra ir jos reikšmė kalinčių asmenų resocializacijai /

Previous research in Lithuania has identified the main features of the prison subculture: hierarchical structure, informal rules and norms, jargon, etc (Petkus 2001; Vaičiūnienė 2017). The problem that the prison subculture and its peculiarities may hinder the implementation of effective resocialisation of prisoners, which is the main objective of imprisonment, is highlighted. The aim of this study was therefore to analyse the characteristics of the Lithuanian prison subculture and to analyse in detail the implications of the prison subculture for resocialisation, given the increasing attention paid to its effective implementation in the penal system. The theoretical underpinning of this theme is based on D. Clemmer's concept of prionisation with G. M. Sykes and S. Messinger's model of deprivation and C. Tittles' balance of control theory. Qualitative research was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 4 groups of subjects: those serving and having served a prison sentence and those working in the prison/system and those who had worked in the past. The analysis of the data obtained from the research showed that the prison subculture is still a topical problem of the prison system, the main features of the prison subculture, which have been modified in comparison with previous times, the bases and functions of its adherence, the measures to reduce the expression of the subculture, which are not oriented to the long-term perspective, have been analysed and identified. It has been found that the prison subculture has a negative impact on the resocialisation of prisoners through various aspects of the subculture, such as violent conflict resolution, the promotion of negative prison conditions, unemployment, mocking attitudes and attendance at resocialisation programmes, lack of communication with staff, substance abuse and encouragement to commit crime.
