In the prison system, little attention is still paid to pregnant women and mothers, ensuring their and their children's needs during the execution of the prison sentence. Because the majority of those in the prison system are men, gender - specific differences that should be addressed in the criminal justice system are overlooked. Ignoring such individualization of punishments, pregnant women and mothers may face several problems when they enter prison, from failure to perform early pregnancy detection, childbirth complications to raising a child in an incarcerated environment. In order to reveal the experiences of pregnant women and mothers serving a prison sentence, a qualitative study is presented, in which the employees of the medical department of the Panevėžys prison, women serving a prison sentence in the Children's (infant) department, and the Child and Mother House participated. The thesis identifies the problems that pregnant women and mothers may face in prison: from the very beginning, during pregnancy, to raising a child in prison. Since there are relatively few studies in Lithuania that examine the experience of women in criminal justice system, especially about women who are pregnant or have children, it was important to pay attention and identify problems so that they could be solved in the future. Tasks set to achieve the goal: discuss the concept of punishment, the change of prison sentence overtime and the importance of the gender aspect in the penal system; review scientific works and name the problems faced by pregnant women and mothers in prisons; present the legal acts of the Republic of Lithuania, international recommendations that regulate the procedure for the execution of prison sentences for pregnant women and mothers. Also, based on the experience of the research participants, identify the problems faced by pregnant women and mothers serving prison sentence in Panevėžys prison in the Children (infant) department and in the Child and Mother's Home.
