Abstract

dc:description

This study analyses a relevant topic: student’s motivation towards learning French as a foreign language. French is taught in most Lithuanian educational institutions as a freely chosen second foreign language starting in the 5th or 6th grade. Some schools use a content language integrated learning (CLIL) approach for teaching French. In such schools, there are EMILE or francophone classes. While studying in these classes, in addition to regular French lessons, pupils have at least one French and another subject as music or history integrated lesson once a week. According to researchers, due to the authentic content introduced in such a language learning process, students expand their vocabulary, familiarise themselves with different grammatical forms, and therefore learn French better and even faster. The subject of this work is students' motivation for learning French in EMILE and regular classes. The aim is to investigate and compare students' motivation for learning French in EMILE and regular classes. Literature analysis was carried out to identify the main aspects of learning motivation, and French language teaching methods and to provide background information about EMILE classrooms in Lithuania. Then, an empirical study was conducted to investigate students’ motivation towards learning French in EMILE and regular classes. The study involved students from two different schools: Vilnius Martynas Mažvydas Progymnasium, where students learn French in EMILE classrooms, and Vilnius Palaimintasis Teofilius Matulionis Gymnasium, where French language teaching is organised regularly without integrating other educational subjects. The final results of the study confirmed that students from both types of classes demonstrate a fairly high level of motivation. Also, there was no big difference between the level of motivation of students from EMILE and regular classes. Therefore, the study confirmed that there is no clear relationship between learning motivation and CLIL while learning French as a foreign language.
