The thesis explores how the cultural background, family ties, and societal norms shaped the artistic expressions of Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming, within the context of Wu painting. It presents the historical development of the Wu school, emphasizing the role of intellectual families and society in the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Furthermore, it examines how social relationships influenced the development of artistic expression and the depiction of sociocultural ideas in the works of Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming. Employing descriptive historical methods, semiotics, and content analysis, the thesis provides valuable insights into the interaction between art, culture, and society during this period, shedding light on the broader heritage of Chinese art influenced by Wu painting. It investigates the collaboration between artists and intellectuals, drawing inspiration from Confucian and Daoist philosophies, and highlights the collective creative thinking and distinctive painting styles characteristic of the Wu school. Additionally, the thesis draws upon significant scholarly works to offer a comprehensive understanding of the historical and cultural context shaping Ming artistic practices and the development of the Wu school, while also recognizing the important role played by intellectual lineages in fostering artistic innovation.
