Abstract
dc:descriptionNowadays psychologists' interest in beauty signals the need for a better understanding of its effects. Previous research allows us to know what psychological research trends and questions have been relevant in a historical context. Although modern research on beauty is mainly focused on cognitive processes, this work examines the construct of perceived beauty more broadly. Taking into account the insights about beauty refined in philosophical research and the perspective of positive psychology, this work aimed to find out the meaning of perceived beauty, its connections with gratitude and the meaning of life. It was also researched if the perception of beauty, the meaning of life and gratitude depends on age and gender. Evaluating the data of 400 people who took part in the study, it was found that perceived beauty is related to both gratitude and existing and sought meaning in life. Both sought and felt meaning in life is predicted by gratitude, while age predicts existing meaning in life and perceived beauty predicts sense of sought meaning in life. Differences in age groups were found only when assessing the current sense of the meaning of life, which was felt most strongly by the oldest study participants. Meanwhile, gender differences emerged in the areas of perceived beauty and gratitude, which women experience more strongly than men.
