The subject of the bachelor's thesis is the reforms of Japanese colonial education in Taiwan and their influence on the ethnic groups of the island. The primary goal of the work is to find out what changes in the education system were made during the period of Japanese colonization in Taiwan and to compare how it affected the life and identity of the Taiwanese Chinese and aboriginal ethnic groups. The aim is to find out what changes in the education system were carried out in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, to analyze the different experiences of ethnic groups and changes in life style during the educational reforms, to find out how the assimilation process carried out by the Japanese affected the life of ethnic groups in the post-colonial period. Through historical analysis of primary sources and comparison of experiences and circumstances of ethnic groups, it has been concluded that Japanese colonial education, implemented with the aim of assimilating Taiwanese into Japanese culture, was more successful among Taiwanese Chinese than among indigenous tribes. The Chinese, because of their Confucian cultural roots, valued education and were therefore quicker to adopt language and school curriculum reforms than the culturally isolated natives. Japanese education produced many specialists, but they were not allowed to occupy high positions due to racial discrimination. The effectiveness of assimilation into a Japanese identity, after the Japanese Empire withdrew from the island, became one of the reasons for Taiwanese identity searches. Colonial education was less widespread in indigenous areas and therefore less influential to them than the Chinese. However, in the post-colonial period, it was difficult for indigenous people to get good education or good job opportunities in their territories. Therefore, the autochthons were forced to migrate to cities in the post-colonial period in search of a better life. This undergraduate thesis may be useful for those studying the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan or analyzing ethnic groups in Taiwan.
