Lithuania's rapidly ageing demographic is increasing the need for social services for the elderly. These services are mostly provided and organised in residential care facilities for the elderly. Reteriment homes provide comprehensive care and care for the elderly. Social workers provide a range of social services. Social workers are confronted with a wide range of different factors in their work. The aim of this paper is to identify the factors that determine the content of the social worker's activities in an elderly care home. John Elster's (2000) theory of rational choice action explains what determines each individual's decision-making. Individual choices are influenced by two mechanisms: opportunity and bounded rationality mechanisms. Opportunity mechanism factors are external conditions that shape the choices available to individuals and influence their decisions. Opportunity factors include a range of objective external factors that can influence people's behaviour, activities and opportunities, which interact with personal preferences and beliefs. Constrained rationality factors, on the other hand, include internal constraints that prevent individuals from making fully rational decisions. Mechanisms of bounded rationality may arise from cognitive, motivational, emotional and social constraints on the individual. These mechanisms also affect the social worker's ability to make the best decisions in certain situations. In order to define the factors that determine the content of social worker's activity, a qualitative semi-structured research method was chosen. Six social workers working in retirement homes with 3+ years of experience were interviewed. The results of the study revealed that the content of social workers' activities is determined by internal and external factors. The internal factors are determined by factors that come from within the person: the person's character traits, motivation, work goals, skills and practices. External factors are determined by factors from outside the organisation: the people in the organisation, the people's relatives, the organisation and its internal rules and training.
