Profesinio perdegimo patyrimas: praktikuojančių psichoterapeutų perspektyva /

Abstract

dc:description

Professional burnout is a highly relevant issue among practicing psychotherapists, but there is a lack of qualitative research on this problem in the scientific literature. Qualitative research helps to better understand and describe the phenomenon. The insights gained are useful not only for deepening the scientific understanding of the burnout phenomenon among psychotherapists but also for developing burnout prevention programs. For this reason, this study aimed to examine and describe the burnout experiences of practicing psychotherapists and to compare the results with the scientific literature. The study involved 5 psychotherapists who experienced burnout during their practice, aged from 31 to 47 years old (mean age M=40). A qualitative research strategy was chosen for the study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2021) was used for data analysis. The study results align with the existing claims in the scientific literature about psychotherapist burnout and revealed a gap in research examining the impact of work-specific factors on burnout. The study identified four main themes of psychotherapists' burnout experiences:1) Gradual journey to burnout; 2) Work culture shaping burnout; 3) Burnout and personality: being more than a psychotherapist; 4) The impact of work specifics on burnout. These themes revealed not only how psychotherapists experience the phenomenon of burnout but also indicated that the manifestation of burnout is influenced by external factors such as working conditions, colleague support, and the specifics of the work, as well as internal factors such as the psychotherapists' personality, ability to set boundaries, personal goals and standards, and consideration of personal needs.
