Šintoizmo vaidmuo šiuolaikinėje Japonijoje: Shinkai Makoto kūrybos analizė /

This thesis focuses on three anime films - “Your Name”, “Weathering with You”, and “Suzume”, all created by the director Shinkai Makoto. The goal of this work is to analyze the role of Shintoism in contemporary Japan, and its purpose in these three works of Shinkai Makoto. The main objectives are: to determine the development of Shintoism and its main ideas, to analyze the role of Shintoism in contemporary Japanese society through its relationship with both humans and nature, and lastly, to examine the role of Shintoism in anime, as well as to investigate my chosen three films by figuring out what is the role and purpose of Shintoism in them. This work was completed by using the content analysis method for my primary resources, and the descriptive historical method for the secondary sources. A conclusion was reached, that Shintoism has an important role in the Japanese society, both in connection with nature, and with people, which can also be seen in the three chosen films by Shinkai. These works feature an abundance of various Shinto ideas and elements, which allow us to see the role of Shintoism not only in the Japanese society, but also in the worlds of the works themselves. It is mostly done through various connections and relationships such as between humans and nature, as well as just among humans. This way, Shinkai Makoto directs attention and brings awareness to various problems that exist within the Japanese society, such as depopulation or climate change, as well as the contrast between the rural and the city. This bachelors thesis might be useful to anyone, researching Shintoism in the films of Shinkai Makoto.
