Darbas vyrų dominuojamose užimtumo srityse: moterų patirtys, dirbant IT sektoriuje Lietuvoje /

Abstract

dc:description

Despite progress in gender equality policies, women are still underrepresented in male– dominated employment areas. The IT sector is one such area. Women doubt their chances due to stereotypes, attitudes, and other factors, or are convinced that they will not be successful and stable in this „male“ field. The situation of women working in the IT sector in Lithuania is an almost unexplored area, so little attention is paid to women working in this field and their career biographies. This study aims to analyze the experiences of women working in the male–dominated IT sector in Lithuania, revealing their „Project of the Self“ narrative. A comprehensive literature review has been carried out, which discusses the challenges and various social, structural, psychological, and cultural factors affecting gender inequality, and helps to identify the barriers and prejudices women face when working in „male“ employment fields or willing to start a career in male–dominated fields. The analysis of statistical data highlights problematic aspects such as the unequal distribution of men and women in IT, the pay gap, etc., which lead to discrimination against women in the labor market.. The analysis of semi–structured interviews revealed women's experiences of working in the IT sector. Using A. Giddens' idea of the „Project of the Self“, it shows what it means to women to be a woman in IT, what has influenced their career choices, and how their family, friends, and colleagues have reacted to their choices. A. Giddens argues that the formation of the self is a constantly evolving life project. The information gathered has shown how women build their „Self“, by incorporating different aspects of their careers. The results revealed the challenges they face, the organizational cultures they encounter, and the professional identity crises they experience. Despite these difficulties and challenges, the positive experiences of the women are also discussed, such as personal achievement at work and the advantages of working in IT. The study shows that despite working in IT can be challenging, successful careers in IT are possible.
