The thesis examines and compares the spread of Shinto shrines within and beyond the borders of the Empire of Japan, particularly in the context of the political and territorial expansion of the Japanese empire at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides the historical and religious context for the emergence of State Shinto in Japan. The second chapter analyzes the process of spreading Shinto shrines in the territories occupied and colonized by the Japanese Empire, as well as those outside its influence. It describes the categories into which Shinto shrines are divided. The territories discussed within the Empire of Japan include Taiwan, Korea, Sakhalin, Manchuria, the Republic of China, and the South Sea Islands. The regions outside the Empire are Brazil and Hawaii. The third chapter compares the practices, modes of emergence, and integration of Shinto shrines into local cultures both within and outside the Empire of Japan. This work may be useful for scholars studying State Shinto and Overseas shrines.
