Sexual minorities face unique stressors and use a variety of coping strategies. These experiences affect the mental health of sexual minorities. This study examines the consequences of experiencing discrimination and using coping strategies on mental health outcomes in a sample of young adults. The study sample consisted of 71 participants (74,6% female, 23,9% male, 1,4% non-binary person; Mage = 22,52, SD = 2,18), selected from various social networks. Their experiences of discrimination, coping strategies and mental health indicators were assessed with the DHEQ, CDS and DASS-21 instruments, respectively. The results revealed that the study sample had high levels of depression, anxiety and stress. The results did not reveal significant differences between different groups in terms of discrimination experience, coping and mental health indicators. The main findings of the study indicated that mental health indicators were associated with alcohol and drug use, detachment, harassment, victimization, family rejection, vigilance and experiencing vicarious trauma. Thus, it was concluded that mental health indicators and coping and experiencing discrimination are characterized by significant interrelationships. In light of this, further research on these constructs is warranted in order to identify more specific risk groups and more accurate risk factors for experiencing and coping with discrimination in sexual minority young adults.
