Abstract
dc:descriptionThe topic of my final paper „Municipal Authorities' Role in Improving the Health of the Population“ was chosen for purpose to find out what are the main factors which influence the link between activities of institutions of municipalities and population health. It is important to evaluate who has to put more effort in the process and why it is important; how different municipalities in Lithuania implement the process of health promotion. In my paper I examined actions which were taken to strengthen the links between activities of municipal institutions and better population health seeking to become the permanent activity of municipality. The aim of my paper is to evaluate the role of municipal institutions in population health improvement. I reached my aims using four objectives: 1. To determine the role of municipal institutions in performing control of alcohol and tobacco and prevention of it in its territory. 2. To determine the role of municipal institutions in organizing public health events. 3. To evaluate the role of Public Health Bureau (further - PHB) in population health improvement. 4. To evaluate factors defining the participation of self-government institutions in the process of strengthening of population health. Seeking to reach these objectives I carried out a survey using the original questionnaire. The questionnaire included 17 questions. It sent to 23 smallest municipalities of Lithuania. I enquired 10 Lithuanian municipalities, which replied to the questionnaire. The questionnaires were answered online by municipal doctors and/or other specialists. Lithuanian health programs and examined laws also contributed in reaching my objectives. The analysis method used for the discussion of the results. Each question of the questionnaire examined separately. I tried to find out the frequency of repeated answers in the municipalities and that way I preliminary defined the most active municipality. Each question was illustrated using the graphic illustrations. The results allowed to answer the objectives: the control of alcohol and tobacco in municipalities is performed by licenses and permissions for distribution; the main objectives of PHB are public health events and health educational activities; the main factors influencing the participation of municipal institutions in activities for population health improvement are financial, time, place and the lack of the qualified staff.
