dc:descriptionThe Peculiarities of Stress Experienced by the Students of Vilnius University Substantiation: students are the most energetic and the most promising part of mankind. Academic requirements and other factors requiring social adaptation can be the main reasons behind student stress. Prolonged and recurrent stress affects health. As the time of exams approaches, levels of stress experienced by students increase, as does the frequency of cardiovascular, digestive, skeletal, muscular, emotional and immune system disorders. Therefore, research and intervention programmes, which would help students to better protect themselves from stress-induced health problems and improve the quality of their rest and studies are necessary. Objective: to establish connections between the peculiarities of psychosocial stress experienced by Vilnius University 1st and 2nd year students and a subjective evaluation of health, health problems and consumption of addictive substances. Aims: 1) to ascertain the level of psychosocial stress experienced by Vilnius University students; 2) to evaluate the connections between the stress experienced by Vilnius University students and subjective health evaluation; 3) to evaluate the connections between the stress experienced by Vilnius University students and health problems. 4) to evaluate the connections between the stress experienced by Vilnius University students and consumption of addictive substances; Methods: 164 1st and 2nd year social policy and public health students of Vilnius University was surveyed using an annonymous survey method. SSPS 17 and Microsoft Excel 2007 programs were used for data analysis. Interval scale were used to calculate averages and standart variations, and range and nominal scales to establish frequency. Pearson χ2 and Kruskal-Wallis H criterions were used to compare the results of different respondent groups. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to check the normality of the data. A difference was held statistically important, if p≤0,05. Results and conclusions: most of the people surveyed experienced high and medium levels of stress. It was established that the students who assessed their health and their health as compared to their yearmates as better experienced lower levels of stress. The most common complaints among the students were the weakening of the immune and skeletal-muscular systems, the most rare – complaints about the cardiovascular and digestive systems. This allows one to maintain that the ones who encounter these health issues more often, also experience higher levels of psychosocial stress than the ones who do so less. A link between stress and consumption of addictive substances was not established.
