dc:description

The Author: Marius Misiūnas, the 4th year student of Nursing bachelor program at Vilnius University. Work Leader: Lecturer dr. Sonata Varvuolytė, Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Department of Nursing and Fundamentals of Internal Medicine Work size: 46 pages. Keywords: nurses, sleep quality, eating habits, shift work. The aim of the research work: To investigate and evaluate nurses sleep quality and its effects on nutritional habits. Tasks of work: 1. To investigate quality of sleep of nurses who work day or night shifts. 2. To examine plausible association between body mass index and sleep quality of the shift workers. 3. To investigate nutritional habits of the nurses who work in the day and night shifts. 4. To investigate health problems of the nurses who work in the day and night shifts. 5. To examine plausible association between quality of sleep and health problems of the shift workers. Materials and methods: One hundred nurses, who work in either day or night shift, participated in the research. The survey was carried out in Vilnius city clinical hospital and Santariskes clinical hospital in-between February and May of 2016. A survey, consisting of two parents, was used for the research. The first part of the survey was Pittsburg sleep quality index (PSQI). The second part was a survey made out of 30 questions for nutritional habits evaluation and health problems registration. The questions were constructed in a way that participants could rate themselves their sleep quality on the 4 grades system: 0 points for no sleep problems and up to 3 points for substantial sleep problems. General PSQI can also be calculated showing recent quality of sleep: “problematic sleep”, when the index is higher than 5 points or “good sleep”, when the index is lower than 5 points. Data from the surveys was analyzed using statistical software package “SPSS 16.0 for Windows” (SPSS, Chicago, Illinois, USA). Results: We calculated that nurses who work in the day shift (n=50) sleep quality index average was 6.66 points, whereas nurses who work in the night (n=50) had the average of 8.44 points (p<0,05). In order to determine the relationship between sleep quality index and BMI was calculated Pearson correlation coefficient, which was not statistically significant (p>0,05). 36% (n=16) of night shift workers skipped breakfast once in a week, while day shift workers, who tend to skip breakfast at least once a week percentage was 30,6% (n=15) (p<0,05). 26.1% (n=12) of nurses who work in the day shift skip lunch, the percentage of nurses who work in the night shift and skip lunch is 42.9% (n=21). 18% (n=9) of the nurses who work in the day shift eat more than 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, the percentage of night shift working nurses who consume at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables is 4.1% (n=2). 77.1% (n=37) nurses who work in day shift choose food with less fat, while who work in the night shift accounts for 46% (n=23). 14% (n=7) of nurses who work in the day shift use 2 spoons of sugar, 3 spoons or more use 2% (n=1). Nurses who work in the night shift and use 2 spoons of sugar accounts for 20% (n=10), 3 or more spoons use 24% (n=12). Health problems average in the day shift is 2.5, while in the night shift it is 2.82. A weak significant association was seen for sleep quality index and health problems (Pearson r=0,379, p<0,001). Conclusions: 1. Night shift working nurses sleep quality is statistically worse than day shift working nurses. 2. Nurses’ body mass index did not differ between daytime and night time nurses. 3. Nurses, who work in the night shift, tend to eat less nutritious food than the colleagues working in the day shift. 4. Average rate of health problems was similar in both, day and night shifts. 5. There is an association of the sleep quality and health problems: worse sleep quality link to more health problems.
