This Master thesis discusses application of a social model in aphasia treatment. The paper analyses social model methods and means used by Lithuanian speech and language therapists while providing aphasia treatment in health service institutions. The study presents results of the research including questionnaire survey and interview methods aimed at finding out what specific social model methods and programmes are used in Lithuanian health service institutions to treat aphasia. There were 28 respondents in questionnaire survey and 8 interview participants. Research questions: do speech therapists apply a social model in aphasia treatment? What social model programmes and methods are used in aphasia treatment? The most important empirical research conclusions: • Quantitative analysis of questionnaire survey data revealed that speech therapists integrate various social model methods and means treating aphasia in Lithuanian health service institutions. • The research established that speech therapists most frequently apply social model methods related to restoring language and communicative skills, involving clients and their family members into aphasia rehabilitation and adapting the environment. • The research demonstrated that social model aspects related to clients’ social participation are among those most rarely used. • Qualitative analysis of questionnaire survey confirmed that speech therapists often integrate various social model programmes and means in their work • Analysis of interviews with clients showed that family members of clients are rarely involved in aphasia treatment either as active participants or observers. • Aphasia treatment approach integrating the impairment treatment model and the social model elements has been proposed. • The research questions were answered.
