Investigation of 137Cs and Pu isotopes accumulation in soil /
Abstract
dc:description137Cs and plutonium isotopes are found in surface soils bound to soil components. The rate of radionuclide migration in the soil depends on many factors, such as the chemical forms of the radionuclides, the geochemical composition of the soil, physico-chemical conditions, atmospheric precipitation, vegetation and species, microorganism activity, animal and human activities. In order to ensure adequate radiation protection and to develop effective remediation measures for contaminated sites, it is necessary to collect and analyze data on long-term measurements of radionuclide concentrations, describing past and present pollution in the soil and its evolution. The aim of the research summarized in this doctoral dissertation is to establish the factors determining the sorption/desorption and vertical transport of 137Cs and Pu isotopes in soils of different types and different moisture regime (relatively dry or periodically flooded soils). The sorption capacity of plutonium in different soil types with different particle sizes, organic matter and stable elements was evaluated. Factors determining sorption/desorption of Pu and 137Cs in non-boggy and waterlogged soils were analyzed. The sequential extraction method has been applied in practice to evaluate the migration potential of 137Cs and Pu in non-boggy and waterlogged soils.
