"Code Purple": Improving Pediatric Patient Safety through Education of the Frontline Staff

<p><strong>Abstract: </strong>Child abduction prevention initiative aims to keep our children safe while admitted into the pediatric unit through education of the frontline staff with simple revision of the current policy and procedure (P&P) and protocol of the security tag system. The quality improvement project begins with a microsystem audit of the unit on the use of the security tag system (P&P, protocol and deficiency). Specifically, children under the age of ten will be the focus of the said project. Prior to the intervention, P&P will be revised to reflect the change in the protocol of securing security tags on children admitted into unit who are ten years of age or younger. A weekly audit will be used to quantify data. An educational session will be provided to all staff by the clinical nurse leader (CNL) and educator. Biomed personnel will continually do a weekly audit for any faulty tags or a defect in the computer system. Four weeks after the educational session an audit will be conducted to measure compliance. An additional four weeks of audit will be conducted to continually measure compliance and sustainability of the project. Focal points of the child abduction prevention initiative include improved safety, peace of mind for parents and ongoing good care delivered by the staff. Outcomes will be measured using data from the weekly audits.</p>
