Recovery-Oriented Care and Inpatient Psychiatric Nursing Practice

<p>For the past 15 years, major organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and U.S. federal government have been committed to shifting mental health services from the medical model of care to the recovery-oriented model of care (Moller & McLoughlin, 2013). However, not all identified recovery-oriented practices have been fully implemented throughout mental health services, specifically in acute care settings. In 2015, San Mateo Medical Center’s acute psychiatric nursing staff completed McLoughlin’s (2005) Recovery Self-Assessment- Registered Nurse (RSA-RN). Data showed that 34% of nursing staff did not believe that the nurses within the Department of Psychiatry use a language of recovery and 40% reported that they did not feel that the hospital was recovery- oriented. In September 2016, a one-day workshop focused on the relevance, impact, and principles of the recovery-oriented care philosophy was held for all disciplines within the Department of Psychiatry, including nursing staff. In order to collect additional data specific to the one-day workshop, the RSA-RN was administered to nursing staff at the start of the workshop. Results from the pre-workshop assessment showed that 34% did not believe that the nurses within the Department of Psychiatry use a language of recovery and 10% did not feel that the hospital was recovery- oriented. A post-intervention RSA-RN assessment was electronically administered to workshop participants via Survey Monkey one month after the workshop; however the response rate was low and prevented a quantitative evaluation of the intervention’s impact on nursing practice.</p>
