Early Childhood Bilingual Education: A Curriculum to Teach Kindergarteners in China to Develop Primary Speaking and Listening Skills in English
Abstract
dc:description.abstract
With the globalization of economy and industry developing rapidly, The Chinese government and society in general regard learning English as a necessary component of success (Hu, 2010). There is considerable pressure for Chinese students to learn English. However, the Chinese government does not require kindergartens to provide English language courses. Consequently, a majority of the kindergartens in China do not provide English classes to their students. As a result, many Chinese children begin to learn English in puberty. Critical period hypothesis (CPH) states there is a critical period of life when language can be acquired more easily, and beyond this time, it is increasingly difficult to acquire a new language. The purpose of this project is to design a curriculum that can be used to teach kindergarteners (3-6 years old) in China to develop primary speaking and listening skills in English.
