IMPROVING BEDSIDE SHIFT-TO-SHIFT NURSING REPORT PROCESS

<p> The aim of the bedside shift-to-shift nursing report project is to increase patient satisfaction, improve patient safety and strengthen team work by improving the process of communication during shift change on the orthopedic unit. The goal is to put in place a standardized approach to hand-over communication between the staff at the change of shift. The project includes staff education sessions consisting of video, role playing, various print materials such as articles and a guide that includes key components of the bedside report. It will be implemented on a 48 bed orthopedic unit in a West Los Angeles hospital. Microsystem assessment was performed which included SWOT analyses, Cause & Effect analyses and observation of several change of shift reports. Data related 5% compliance with bedside shift-to-shift report and each shift with three to four nurses with over time.</p> <p> This project is planned to be implemented in mid-January of 2015. My expected results are an increase in patient satisfaction scores due to patients being informed and included in their treatment plan, decrease number of falls, reduction in nurse overtime and increase in nurse satisfaction. Although the project is still in the planning stage, there is an increase in the patient satisfaction score related to nursing communication from 65% in August, 2015 to 78.2% in October, 2015. Comparative data will be collected post implementation to verify the effectiveness of the project. </p>
