Abstract

dc:description.abstract

According to European aim1, architecture leads towards buildings with energy efficiency and design requirements much more demanding than the currents and which require little or no energy (energy consumption buildings near zero or zero). But in this process we can not forget the restoration of existing buildings since it represents a very high percentage of the total number of built uildings2. In Spain, the residential sector accounts for the 17% of final energy consumption and for the 26%3 if it is joined with the tertiary sector. In addition, only the use of energy in housings accounts for the fifth part of greenhouse gases emissions in our country4. For this reason, the restoration of buildings takes a leading role in the construction sector; restoration of existing housings and their adaptation to sustainability is a priority if we want to reduce the global energy demand. The main objective of this research work is to compile possible constructive solutions that could significantly improve the energy efficiency of an existing building, focusing on its envelope and more specifically on its roof. Different constructive solutions will be studied and valued, and its amortization will be calculated along the time. The roof of a building is one of the most exposed areas to external agents, and therefore its repair is something habitual. Make use of it to improve its heatcan be a highly profitable measure in energy saving and CO2 emissions. The conclusions provide insight into the feasibility of restoration activities that enableusers to have significant energy savings, and learn the importance of extending and/or enlarging the government financial support.
