Abstract

[ENG] The Tower of the Cathedral Church of Santa María of Murcia, as well as its built-up complex, have been the object of study in various fields due to their importance as a Heritage Asset. Its historical and artistic values have made it the icon par excellence of the city of Murcia. This thesis contributes to the knowledge of the Tower of the Cathedral of Murcia by means of a compilation of existing documentation relating to the area of study and the development of the characterisation of the terrain and its structure by means of the application of non-invasive techniques. Knowledge of protected historic structures is a fundamental basis for establishing future protection, intervention and preventive maintenance strategies to ensure the conservation of built heritage. Currently, the existence of non-invasive techniques makes it possible to obtain valuable information without damaging the historic building. This is the focus of this research. A geological, geotechnical and geophysical characterisation of the land underlying the Tower of the Cathedral of Murcia is carried out in order to know the lithology of the area and the seismic parameters of the land, as the building is located in a seismic risk area. The characterisation of the foundations and structure of the Tower is also being carried out by means of photogrammetry, geophysical techniques and soundings. The ground on which the Tower of the Cathedral of Murcia is located has been analysed using the seismic methods of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves, Mini Array, seismic refraction and the H/V spectral ratio method. The Vs and Vp values of the ground, as well as the predominant period of the ground, have been obtained and compared with the existing soundings, yielding positive correlation values. These parameters are essential in seismic engineering, necessary for the classification of site conditions. The characterisation of the foundation using the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves method, the 3D electrical resistivity tomography, the ground penetrating radar and the existing boreholes has presented values that determine the foundation slab of the Tower, its shape and dimensions, as well as the existing cavities. It is once again verified that the combination of geophysical techniques proves to be very advantageous. Finally, a methodology applied to the Tower of the Cathedral of Murcia is developed, which is very useful and reliable for the structural evaluation of slender historical tower-type buildings, by means of the control of deformations through the digitalisation of these constructions with the help of drones and the use of photogrammetric technology and computer programmes for their study and analysis.
