Abstract
This research analyzes on monthly basis the impact of macroeconomic variables on the behavior of microcredit in Peru’s Municipal Savings and Credit Banks during the period 2016–2024. The study employs an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, which allows identifying short- and long-term relationships between macroeconomic determinants and the performance of microcredit. The results show that microcredit exhibits countercyclical behavior with respect to the economic cycle, increasing during periods of slowdown and moderating in phases of expansion. This behavior confirms its role as a mechanism of adjustment and social stabilization in the face of macroeconomic shocks. Likewise, evidence suggests that labor market conditions and the financial prudence of microfinance institutions influence credit dynamics, particularly during periods of uncertainty such as the COVID-19 health crisis. Overall, the study provides updated empirical evidence on the role of microcredit as an instrument of financial inclusion and resilience in peruvian economy, highlighting the importance of policies that strengthen its sustainability and capacity to respond to crises.
