Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>When We Were Hunted is a cycle of short stories centered on the members of a California Indian/Mexican family grieving the loss of Michael, the complicated man they knew as a father and husband. The book spans four years and begins a few weeks after the death of Michael, who had been imprisoned for drug trafficking. The chapters alternates among the perspectives of Michael's daughter, Alma; his son, Eric; and wife, Lisa. While each story is self contained, the individual stories also work to contribute to the overall coherence of the collection. The collection seeks to explore issues of diaspora, migration, place, violence and grief from an Indigenous perspective.</p>
