Abstract
dc:description.abstractWhile many of the stories in this collection deal with the population and physical space of the state of Nebraska (both in the current era and in speculation on the state’s future), every story in the collection deals with human beings’ ability to actively exert their influence and identity upon the space in which they live and the (occasionally equal, often opposite) reaction of that setting and its other inhabitants. The State of Nebraska, a cramped Japanese apartment, the intangible realm of the internet, a colonized moon, and the canvas of a painting all become arenas in which characters will attempt to be who they are or who they believe they aught to be, even as the odds continue to favor the house over the fortunes of any individual player.
