One Church, Two States: Ethnicity Among the Toba Bataks in a Transnational Christian Community

This work also analyzes Toba Batak identity dilemmas derived from incompatibility of their indigenous culture with Christianity. Both the Indonesian and the Singaporean development ideologies support Christianity and represent it as appropriate for modernization while Toba Batak indigenous culture includes elements conflicting with Christianity. Individual Toba Bataks express their ethnicities by resolving these conflicts or leaving them unsolved. They sometimes challenge the national ideologies for their expressions of ethnicities.
