The Role of Resilience in the Adjustment of Adult Children of Alcoholics
Abstract
dc:descriptionAs hypothesized for ACOAs, the relationship between parental alcoholism and attachment to peers was partially mediated by family functioning. The moderating role of social support was also significant in the adjustment of adult children of alcoholics. In contrast, attachment to parents was found to significantly mediate the relationship between family functioning and psychological outcome in nonACOAs, a relationship that was not significant for their ACOA peers. The moderating role of locus control was also significant in the adjustment of nonACOAs, whereas social support was not. Implications for clinical and empirical work with ACOAs are considered.
