"Transylvania University: ""Public"" Higher Education in Kentucky, 1780--1878"

Chapter one details the pursuit of definitions of public and private higher education beginning with the case of Dartmouth College v. Woodward, and traces how historians and courts have subsequently interpreted it. Chapter one also includes a justification for using Transylvania University as the focus of study. In chapters two through five, the evolution of Transylvania University, is traced from its creation in 1780 through 1878. It is from the development of Transylvania University that the interaction of the three variables of mission, funding and control emerges as a useful construct for understanding the public/private distinction in American higher education during this period. Finally in chapter six, Transylvania is placed into a larger context through comparison to other institutions during this period, and a discussion of findings and conclusions is presented.
