Rules, Needs, Resources, Power, and Matrix Man

This dissertation is about power and power-related concepts as they are variously represented in the social science literature. The underlying need for a systematic theoretical position as a starting point for research is addressed with the development of and abstract analytic framework in which specific power-related concepts (dominance, authority, command, dependence, compliance, and obedience) are relationally organized in terms of rules, needs, and resources. The method by which this is done is generated as part of the conceptualizing process and is generally suggestive of a systems approach. The potential utility of the analytic framework developed is discussed and the usefulness of conceptually separating power from related concepts is supported.
