Metabolism of Two Model Xenobiotics in Cultured Plant Cells

Plant cells in culture were found to oxygenate two model xenobiotics. Para-chlorophenyl methyl sulfide was S-oxidized by carrot, cotton, tobacco, alfalfa, and blacknightshade cell cultures. The rates of S-oxygenation by cultured plant cells were comparable to the rates in animal tissue preparations. The plant cell metabolism of the promutagen-procarcinogen 2-aminofluorene was evaluated by a mutagen bioassay. The mutagenic activation of 2-aminofluorene by cultured plant cells was detected by the induction of reverse mutation at the his locus of Salmonella typhumerium. A photoautotrophic cotton cell culture was developed to facilitate xenobiotic metabolism research in photosynthetic cultured plant cells.
