The Effects of Coulombic Large Energy Transfer Collisions in Fusion Grade Plasmas (Kinetic, Diagnostic, Distortion)
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe mechanism of Coulombic large energy transfer (CLET) collisions is investigated for applications to fusion power systems. This mechanism generates a distortion in the distribution function of the thermal ions due to CLET collisions between the fast ions and thermal ions. An analytic expression is obtained for the CLET differential scattering kernel. A formalism is developed in which this kernel is used to calculate the distribution function evolution when CLET collisions are treated correctly. This formalism accounts for the thermal motion of the ions. For the first time, those Coulombic collisions which transfer an energy between several percent and several times the temperature are explicitly treated. The effects of the CLET mechanism are calculated for a variety of experimental and reactor size fusion machines.
