Application of the resonant rotating wave approximation to the theory of resonant scattering

A theoretical study of the resonant scattering of light, including the effects of strong fields, is reported. The formulation is developed within the context of a new approximation, the resonant rotating wave approximation (RRWA). The RRWA is similar to the standard R\-lA, except that non-resonant rotating terms, as well as all the counter-rotating terms, are neglected. The RRWA is derived, rigorously justified, and shown to yield results consistent with standard non-relativistic expressions for the Lamb shift. The formulation describes resonant scattering by atoms with hyper-fine level structure and yields results relevant to recent experimental studies.
