1997 as a turning point: Teacher attitudes towards recent changes in Hong Kong education

This study is an investigation into the attitudes of Hong Kong English teachers regarding the changes in education after the 1997 handover. A questionnaire was distributed to 25 teachers in a diploma program. To follow up, several focus groups were conducted with a total of 11 teachers. The results from the questionnaire and the focus groups confirmed each other. The teachers acknowledged the importance of English in Hong Kong after 1997, complained about the lack of student motivation in learning English, and showed ambivalence on the issue of the medium of instruction. In addition, students cannot see the relevance of English while English is necessary in Hong Kong, and this will still be an apparent problem after the handover.
