Soul study: definitions and expressions of spiritual well-being among Black Americans

The purpose of this study was to explore definitions and expressions of Black American spiritual well-being. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a national sample of Black American adults (N=15). This study aimed to answer (a) how does a diverse group of Black Americans define SWB? And (b) what are their common expressions of SWB? Data were analyzed using an interpretative phenomenological method. Two main finding were revealed. First, the SWB of Black Americans is a matter of healing wounds and preventing harm that necessitates social, political, and spiritual liberation. Based on this finding and participants responses, spiritual well-being is a defined as a holistic concept that includes at least seven interrelated processes: healing, connection, growth, freedom, faith and hope, insight and purpose. Secondly, common expressions that represent spiritual well-being, including (a) establishing healing connections, (b) naming injustice and seeking justice (c) using artistry, and (d) embracing the journey.
