Valuation tool for food-energy-water portfolio outcomes
Abstract
dc:descriptionDespite the ever-growing literature on valuation of Food-Energy-Water System (FEWS) portfolio elements, there remains no resource that consolidates methods for valuing multiple FEWS elements in one space. This study addresses this need by developing a valuation module that uses established methods from the literature to output monetary estimates for five FEWS portfolio elements given user inputs. The module is designed to provide prospective users with varying levels of economics acumen with a convenient way of obtaining quick monetary values to inform future research or policy development. The module also makes established valuation methods more accessible to audiences who may not be well-versed with how to properly monetize changes to the physical flows of FEWS portfolio elements. The utility of the valuation module is demonstrated through a case study, in which two sets of spatially and temporally explicit inputs for all five FEWS portfolio elements are fed into the module to obtain changes in value resulting from a user-defined alternative scenario. We show how the results are sensitive both to the characteristics of the inputs themselves, as well as the default values and assumptions of the methods contained within the module.
