Establishing a Scale to Measure the Need for Attention (NFA)

Abstract

dc:description

Need for attention (NFA) refers to the tendency of individuals to require and search for interpersonal recognition and acknowledgement. This dissertation uses psychographic methods to develop a scale establishing the unique features of NFA that differentiate it from other personality traits, values, and characteristics. Arising from the notion of intersubjectivity and recognition of the self and others, NFA is a unique theoretical entity. The purpose of this research is to fill a gap in the existing literature by developing, refining, and validating a scale for NFA that can be widely utilized in future studies to measure the characteristic. This dissertation distinguishes NFA from other concepts using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and experimentation to define a comprehensive scale. The formal definition of NFA offered here suggests that NFA is a facet of personality with broad implications for consumer behavior. I provide an explication of the fundamental aspects of NFA through the item generation and refinement process. Next, construct validity is established to demonstrate the singularity of NFA in relation to narcissism, vanity, extraversion, and privacy. Predictive validity studies relate NFA to preference for attention-grabbing products and embarrassment in consumption settings. I conclude with a summary of results and discussion of future research directions.
