Some Effects of Loss Formula Variation on Power System Production Costs.

The use of a transmission loss formula in economic dispatch of generation is the most common approach in modern power system operation. A great deal of literature has been devoted to the problem of calculating accurate loss formulae. Several methods employ quite lengthy attempts to establish the loss formula accuracy by calculating many power flow check cases and comparing total transmission loss calculated using the loss formula with that actually calculated by the power flow program.It is, however, Incremental Transmission Loss that is of primary importance in dispatching generating units and very little has been written in the literature comparing production costs incurred in economic dispatching using different loss formulae to calculate incremental transmission loss.Also, little has been written concerning variations in loss formula accuracy and their effect upon production cost. This thesis presents a comparison of dispatches incurred through use of several commonly used loss formulae with those incurred in using a relatively new approach. This new approach to loss formula calculation is then varied in several ways to determine the economic impact of the loss formula in dispatching a test power system for a simulated twenty-four hour operating period.
