The Uniform Hanging Cable as a Translational Vibration Absorber.

The small, lateral vibrations of a system consisting of a uniform cable suspended from a mass in a gravitational field and having a lower end mass are considered in this thesis. The frequencies and modal configurations for free vibration were determined. Secondly, a harmonically varying forcing function was applied to the upper mass for the purpose of studying the forced motion of the system. Finally, it was shown that by proper selection of the cable length, the cable-lower mass system can serve as a dynamic vibration absorber for the forced upper mass.
