A Study of the Opinions of Alabama Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Regarding Selected Factors Related to Chemical Dependency.

A questionnaire survey was mailed to all Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in Alabama in order to ascertain their opinions regarding selected factors related to their risk of chemical impairment, and ultimately to determine a future course of action for a newly formed committee on chemical dependence. Specific areas studied were (a) the effects of professional instruction upon knowledge concerning the risk of becoming chemically dependent, (b) misconceptions and bias towards chemical dependence, and (c) expected level of support for various proposed programs designed to assist chemically dependent nurse anesthetists. This study revealed that there was not a statistically significant difference between responders who had had formal instruction about chemical dependence during their professional education and their knowledge of the risk of chemical dependence. Prior exposure of the respondent to a chemically dependent individual was associated with significant bias and a minimum understanding of the risk of chemical dependence among nurse anesthetists. Questionnaire results did reveal a strong element of support for programs that would assist chemically dependent Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in Alabama.
