The Changing Role of Women in Policing: Job Satisfaction Study in the Birmingham Police Department.

The role of women in America today is in a state of flux. The increase in the number of women in the labor market shows that their social and economic roles are changing. More women are employed in the United States labor force than ever before (Population Reference Bureau, 1977:319). It was reported that 42.8% of the American Labor force was composed of women in 1970 and that the percentage of working women has increased each year (Brownlee, 1976:3). Women are entering occupations which have traditionally been dominated by males. One of these occupations is that of law enforcement.
