Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe world's population has reached an all time high and more people are living in cities than in the countryside for the first time in human history. The social, economic and environmental issues faced by urban places and the people living in them are an ever changing and ever more concerning set of problems. The urban heat island effect can have a detrimental effect on many aspects of an urban dweller's life, and as a key contributor to the materiality of the urban landscape and therefore the urban heat island effect, architecture has a role to play. This research takes the first steps towards understanding the role of architecture in urban heat island mitigation by beginning to explore the effect existing buildings have on urban heat, through experiments on fi ve of the most common cladding materials found in Glasgow, Scotland.
