The Relationship Between Alcohol Use and Cognitive Insight, and their Association with Sleep and Anxiety

Chapter 1 Introduction: This chapter provides an overview of alcohol use as a major public health concern in South Africa and outlines the concept of cognitive insight. It explains how alcohol use, sleep and anxiety are interconnected. It also presents the problem statement, theoretical framework, study rationale, aims, objectives and research hypotheses guiding the investigation. Chapter 3 Methodology: This chapter describes the research design, setting and participants using secondary data from Shared Roots study conducted in Cape Town. It details the data collection procedures, measurement instruments (STEPS, BCIS, PSQI and STAI), data analysis methods and ethical considerations applied in the study. several sections thus (i) Socio-demographic characteristics of the sample, (ii) Alcohol consumption patterns, (iii) Psychological measures, (iv) Associations between alcohol use, cognitive insight, sleep and anxiety and (v) Regression analyses examining predictors of sleep quality and anxiety. Chapter 5 Discussion: This chapter interprets the findings in relation to existing literature. It discusses sociodemographic trends, alcohol consumption patterns, cognitive insight, sleep quality and anxiety. The chapter also explores the combined effects of alcohol use and cognitive insight on sleep anxiety, highlighting the study’s strengths, limitations and implications for future research. Chapter 6 Conclusion: This chapter summarizes the key findings of the study and their clinical and public health implications. It concludes by offering recommendations for future research and interventions aimed at addressing alcohol use, cognitive insight, sleep disturbances and anxiety.
