Assessment of Hard Red Spring Wheat Germplasm for Germination in Sub-Optimal Temperatures

<p>Early planting of hard red spring wheat (HRSW; Triticum aestivum L.) tends to extend the period of vegetative growth and can help maximize agronomic productivity. Improved germination performance in sub-optimal temperatures, or cold temperature germination tolerance (CTGT), is therefore a desirable characteristic of HRSW grown in the North Central Great Plains region. Fifty HRSW genotypes were evaluated for germination and growth rates at ten temperatures: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, and 20 °C. Genotypes were replicated four times within each temperature treatment. Germination scores, mass, and dry mass of seedlings were collected for each genotype. Due to limited rates of growth at colder temperatures, data was collected on day 7 for temperatures 13, 15, 17, 19, 20 °C and on day 14 for each of the remaining lower temperatures. Germination percentages were observed to decrease with lower temperature treatments and increased differences in treatment mean germination percentages were observed above 13 °C. Germination scores could not be collected at 3 °C, due to lack of seedling development. Genotype SD4330 was observed to possess the highest level of CTGT. Genotypes ‘Mott’ and SD4280 also exhibited high levels of CTGT. Winter wheat genotypes ‘Wesley’ and ‘Expedition’, which were included in the study for comparative purposes, were found to have the lowest level of CTGT. Broad sense heritability of CTGT on an entry mean basis was estimated to be 0.73 across the temperatures of 5-11 °C. This suggests that spring wheat breeders should be able to manipulate CTGT without great difficulty.</p>
