The Medicine Wheel for Carbohydrate Counting

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study provides a formative evaluation of a culturally specific web-based tool “The Medicine Wheel for Carbohydrate Counting.” This web-based educational tool reflects Native American culture and values, primarily of the Native Americans of the Northern Plains. In-depth interviews from ten adult Native Americans with a diagnosis of diabetes were interviewed of semi-structured open-ended questions were utilized to evaluate this tool. The in-depth interviews were conducted to inquire for overall perception of usefulness, ease of use, and understandability. Interviews were transcribed verbatim using Grounded Theory. Future work can incorporate feedback and create a tool that may better engage the Native population to control and help reduce risk for diabetes and diabetes related complications.
