The Correlation between Work/Life Balance, Intent to Stay, and the Personal Well-being among Female Nurses at a Rural Community Hospital in the Midwest

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Work/life balance (WLB) is a must in today's society. Not only are employees with families demanding flexible work schedules, but so are those without families. People today want to have more time to spend with both friends and family. Not only do employees benefit, but employers are also showing benefits from providing today's employees with WLB programs (Robinson, 2005). These programs provide employees with an edge on competitors by offering flexible scheduling and time off. This study examined the correlation between WLB and well-being and the correlation between WLB and intent to stay among female nurses at a rural community hospital in the northern Midwest.
A descriptive correlation design was used for this study. A convenience sample of 40 female nurses at a rural community hospital in the northern Midwest was chosen. WLB was measured using the Work Home Inference Scale, well-being was measured using the GHQ-12 questionnaire, and intent to stay was measured with a single question. There was a moderate and statistically significant positive correlation between WLB and well-being as- well as WLB and intent to stay.
