Nurse Practitioners' Knowledge and Use of Complementary and Integrative Medicine

<p>With the increase and widespread the use of complementary/integrative medicine, there has been limited research on nurse practitioners' knowledge and use of complementary/integrative medicine. This descriptive study employed a mailed survey with 115 randomly selected South Dakota nurse practitioners to examine their past/current use and recommendations of complementary/integrative medicine, as well as their knowledge level of complementary/integrative medicine.<br> Results showed that 80.9%(N=55) of the responders have personally used complementary/integrative medicine for themselves. Eighty-three percent of the survey responders did make complementary/integrative medicine recommendations to their patients, with the most recommended therapies being massage therapy, chiropractic and nutritional therapy. The level of knowledge as "know a lot" was 38.2 %, 30.9 %, and 26.5% for these three therapies respectively. Overall, the survey responders reported the usefulness of complementary/integrative medicine in primary care as "very useful" (N= 24) and "somewhat useful" (N=41) and "not useful at all" (N= 3).</p>
