The Correlation between Competitive Foods Availability, Students at Risk for Overweight and Overweight, and Strength of School Officials' Beliefs Favoring Improved School Nutrition Environment in Arkansas Public High Schools

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Obesity, particularly in people under the age of 18, has been on the rise for over 20 years and is associated with a number of serious health consequences. Most public high schools allow the sales of competitive foods (those foods which are not regulated or a part of the reimbursable meals programs) to students on school grounds. Arkansas is one state which mandates the annual collection of body mass index (BMI) data for all students. This study examined the relationship between the availability and quality of competitive foods and the BMI of students in Arkansas public high schools.
