Barriers and Facilatoris of Disclosure of Alternative Health Modalities to Traditional Providers
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe use of alternatives to traditional medical treatment has increased in the last decade, despite the advances of modem medicine. These alternative health modalities are chosen by a wide variety of individuals to cope with their health care needs. The problem under investigation is: What are the barriers and facilitators of disclosure of alternative health practices to traditional providers? The study described the demographic characteristics of women and their choice of alternative health modalities. The study also examined the barriers and facilitators of disclosure of alternative modalities to traditional providers. A comparative, descriptive design was utilized. The sample of adult women were randomly selected from a small Midwestem community. The participants completed a questionnaire packet that included an informed consent, a demographic sheet, and one off our stimulated scenario experiences. Data were entered into a computer using the SPSS Data Analysis Package and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test for independent samples and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The study results found no significant difference between or among the simulated scenario groups. Users of AHM however were significantly less likely than non-users to disclose AHM to traditional providers in all four scenarios (F=4.979, p=.028). Recommendations were made for nursing practice, education, and nursing research.
